How to Repair Bifold Doors if the Top Rollers Have Broken Wood

A bifold door slides back and forth along its overhead track by a spring-loaded roller situated on the top edge of the lead bifold door. The lead door is the door that actually glides along the track, while the end of the other door remains stationary. If broken wood is around the roller, it will eventually fail to operate correctly because it cannot remain stable as it continually slides. Focus on either the roller and the broken wood around it, or focus on the door itself, if the damage is significant.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up on the bifold door. Swing the bottom pin out of the floor bracket, and pull down on the top of the door, removing the roller from the track.

    • 2

Obtain and install a replacement bifold door if the broken area on the door is extensive. Measure the height of the bifold door as well as the width of the door with both panels open. Use a tape measure.

    • 3

Unscrew and remove the roller from the top edge of the bifold door, if the broken wood can be repaired. Wipe the edge of the door around the damaged, broken area clean, using a rag.

    • 4

Apply wood glue, or another adhesive that bonds well with wood, to the broken area. Place a small wooden shim between the each jaw of a spring clamp and the door, and install the clamp on the damaged door area, to keep it tight while the adhesive dries. The shims keep the clamp jaws from damaging the door. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for how long to allow the wood glue or other adhesive to dry.

Remove the spring clamp from the bifold door. Screw the guide roller back into the door edge. Install a replacement roller if the roller has sustained damaged because of the broken door. Gently hammer the roller into place, if necessary, to make it seat fully.

Reinstall the door. Place the bottom pin into the floor bracket, then swing the door so the top pin fits into the overhead bracket. Push down on the roller and release it so it goes up into the track.
