Installing a Garage Snap Slide Lock

Garages that have garage door openers should have the center key lock disabled. This prevents someone from accidentally locking the door manually resulting in damage to the opener or door when the opener is operated. The door opener acts as a lock when it is operating properly. Installing a garage snap slide lock enables you to have security in the event the door opener is faulty and must be disconnected from the door temporarily.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the garage door. If you already have a door opener, pull the release rope to disengage the door arm trolley from the opener rail carriage. The pull rope attaches to the lever on the door arm trolley below the opener rail. This helps prevent someone accidentally opening the door while you are installing the slide lock.

    • 2

Find the rectangular hole on the right side door track. Two rectangular holes are usually in the vicinity of the second door panel on the track. These are lock holes for the slide lock bar.

    • 3

Hold the slide lock with the angled end of the lock bar pointing to the left. Press the angled end of the lock bar against the side of the lock to extend the lock bar in the locked position.

    • 4

Position the slide lock on the end stile of the second door section with the extended lock bar going through the rectangular hole on the track. The right side of the slide lock body should be a 1/2 inch away from the edge of the door panel.

    • 5

Mark mounting hole locations onto the door if necessary with a pencil. Most doors already have pre-drilled mounting holes, however it might be necessary to drill new holes if the pre-drilled ones do not align with the lock

    • 6

Drill the mounting holes into the end stile with a 1/4-inch bit. Drill through the inside of the stile, if you have a steel door. Drill halfway through the stile if you have a wood door.

    • 7

Position the slide lock back onto the second door section. Secure the lock body to the door section with 5/8-inch long hex head screws and a socket wrench. Pull the angled handle end of the slide lock to the right. The lock bar is now in the unlocked position. Reconnect the door opener trolley to the opener carriage.
