How to Fix an Unaligned Closet Door

Like most other doors in the home, closet doors hang on a wooden jamb or frame via three side hinges. While doors hang perfectly straight when first installed, they often become misaligned over time and hit the side of the frame near the knob. The misalignment is the result of minor shifts in the home’s foundation, which cause the hinges to sit lower. Fixing the unaligned closet door requires only that you make some modification to the hinges.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the closet door fully so that you can see the three hinges that hold it in place on the door frame.

    • 2

Place a level on top of the door so you can determine when it is in alignment. Insert wooden shims under the bottom edge of the door until the air bubble on the level is in the center.

    • 3

Look at the top hinge and locate the three to four screws that hold it to the frame. Insert a screwdriver into each screw, usually a Philips head, and turn the screws clockwise to fully tighten any that have loosened over time.

    • 4

Repeat the process to tighten the screws in the middle hinge and the lower hinge. Remove the wooden shims from under the closet door and then close it to see if it is properly aligned. If further alignment it required proceed with adjusting the hinges.

    • 5

Insert the shaft of the screwdriver into the bottom of the top hinge. Tap the bottom of the screwdriver handle with a hammer to remove the pin from the top hinge completely.

    • 6

Grasp the hinge barrel using a pair of pliers and bend it toward the opposite side of the frame approximately 1/8 inch, or just until you feel it start to move.

    • 7

Insert the hinge pin back in the hinge and tap the top of it using a hammer to reinsert it fully into the hinge.

    • 8

Close the closet door, which should now align evenly and close without difficulty. If needed, reopen the door and perform the same procedure on the middle and bottom hinges.
