Andersen Window Balancer Removal

Andersen double-hung windows use window balancers to keep the window sashes in any position you place them. If the window sashes slowly drop, it is most likely due to faulty balancers that need to be replaced. Removing the balancers for replacement requires removing both sashes from the window. This is because the balancers are inside the frame liner that has tracks for the sashes. Removing the balancers also requires removing the frame liner from the window frame.
  1. Bottom Sash Removal

    • Lift the bottom sash of your Andersen window 3 inches. Push the wash-assist tabs from the top of the window frame liner down to the top of the bottom sash just as you would to clean the windows. Push the wash-assists between the top of the sash and the frame liner until they lock into place. Grab the top of the bottom sash and pull it inward so it leans at a 90-degree angle inside the room. Hold the sash in one hand and depress the shoe clip on the left frame above the bottom of the sash with a flat head screwdriver. The shoe clip is where the bottom of the sash connects to the window frame. Pull the left bottom of the sash upward, while pressing in on the shoe clip, until the sash is over the clip. Repeat the process for the right side shoe clip. Pull the sash out of the window and set it against a wall out of the way.

    Top Sash Removal

    • Slide both wash-assists back up to the top of the window frame. Lower the top sash 5 inches. Grab the top of the sash with one hand and grab the center of the right window frame liner with your other hand. The liner is the soft vinyl tracks for the sashes. Press inward on the middle of the liner and pull the top of the sash out of the frame. Repeat for the left side of the sash. The top sash should now be at a 90-degree angle, just as it would when you are cleaning the sash. Lower the bottom of the top sash within 3 inches of the bottom window sill. Hold the sash and release the shoe clips exactly as you did for the bottom sash. Pull the sash out of the window and set it against the wall out of the way.

    Frame Liner Removal

    • Insert the flat head screwdriver into one of the shoe balance cams. The cams are visible inside the frame liner. The shoe balance connects to the window balance. Turn the cam 90 degrees so the cam slot is horizontal. Hold the screwdriver and allow the shoe cam to rise until it stops. This releases tension on the shoe cam. Repeat for the remaining three shoe cams. Grab the center of the left frame liner with your thumb inside the top sash track and your fingers inside the bottom sash track. Squeeze each track toward the center of the liner and pull the liner out of the window frame. Repeat for the right side liner.

    Window Balancer Removal

    • Pull the foam plugs out of the top of each liner. There is a plug on top of each sash track. Pull the top of the window balancer out of the frame liner by releasing the S-hook that holds it in place. Continue pulling the window balancer out until you see the connection between the balancer tab and the top of the shoe. Pull the balancer tab out of the shoe. The balancer tab is on the end of a string that connects to the bottom of the window balancer.
