How to Install Window Well Grates

The windows for a basement that are underground have wells that are dug out to allow sunlight into the rooms. These wells are dangerous if not covered by a grate or a plastic well cover because a person could step inside and twist an ankle. To keep from having mold build up due to the heat created by an enclosed plastic cover, a metal grate is your best option for a window well. The metal grate allows air flow while also keeping out unwanted animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a 3-by-3-foot cardboard square over the window well.

    • 2

Trace the outline of the edge of the window well on the cardboard square, using a pencil.

    • 3

Remove the cardboard from the well. Set an adjustable window well grate on top of the cardboard.

    • 4

Align the grate on the cardboard so the grate loops are parallel with the edge of the outline that represents the wall of the house.

    • 5

Loosen the bolts on the four bars that are perpendicular to the loops of the grate, using a 7/16-inch wrench. There are four bolts on each of the middle bars.

    • 6

Stretch the loops to the left and right until the grate covers the entire outline on the cardboard. Tighten the bolts with the 7/16-inch wrench once the grate is stretched.

    • 7

Turn out the brackets to face away from the grate at a 90-degree angle. There are four brackets on the corners of the grate. Tighten the bracket bolts with the 7/16-inch wrench.

    • 8

Set the grate over the window well with the brackets over the edges. Tap 2-inch aluminum pegs into the holes in the center of the bracket, using a rubber mallet.
