How to Repair a Rotary White Birch Door

Rotary white birch wood is cut to show the tree's growth rings. This gives the wood a distinct look with strong grain patterns and plenty of texture. This type of wood is chosen for its look and is often finished with a clear stain so the pattern can show through. When repairing rotary cut wood, patch the cracked or split area with a filler that matches the wood in that area or allows the grain to show through.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean out the damaged area with a bristle brush or the upholstery attachment for your vacuum cleaner. Wash the area with trisodium phosphate, water and a scrub brush if it is soiled, such as on an external door. Allow it to dry thoroughly before proceeding.

    • 2

Mix the two-part wood epoxy on a piece of cardboard by scooping equal parts out of each container. Avoid cross-contaminating the containers by using a different scooping stick for each container. Mix the epoxy together with a putty knife until it is pliable.

    • 3

Work the epoxy wood filler into the damaged area on the door so it is layered right into the back of the crack. Smooth the putty so it is flush with the door's surface using the putty knife.

    • 4

Allow the putty to set according to the manufacturer's instructions. This can take up to 12 hours.

    • 5

Sand the putty with 220-grit sandpaper so the surface is smooth and it blends into the rest of the door. Wipe with a tack cloth.
