How to Install Offset Door Pivots

A DIYer can install an offset door pivot with the help of basic tools. This type of door hardware differs from a standard door hinge since it is typically L-shaped and made of heavy-duty steel. An offset door pivot is stronger than butt hinges, therefore it is necessary for doors that are quite heavy or get a lot of use. The hardware does not loosen over time like some butt hinges. Offset pivots support the entire door from whichever side you desire, thus providing more options than standard hinges.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the packaging that holds the offset pivot and take out the paper template. When positioned according to the directions, the template ensures that the screws are oriented properly. Once the offset pivot is in the correct place, it allows the door to open and close efficiently.

    • 2

Tape the template to the side of the door with masking tape.

    • 3

Strike a chisel with a hammer to create the recesses on the template.

    • 4

Drill holes where indicated on the template by using an electric drill and bit. This allows you to mount the offset pivot.

    • 5

Hang a plumb bob directly in front of the hole you created with the drill. The place it touches on the floor is where you must install the floor section of the pivot. Use the fasteners included in the packaging to add this part to the floor.

    • 6

Position the offset pivot along the predrilled holes. Add screws to hold the pivot in place, using a screwdriver.

    • 7

Ask a helper to assist you in placing the door in position. Set the spindle arm in the floor section of the pivot component.

    • 8

Twist the screw on the pivot pin by using a screwdriver. This helps to secure the door.

    • 9

Tighten the lock rings on the pivot. Use an Allen wrench to do this.

    • 10

Open and close the door a few times to ensure that the offset pivot is working properly.
