Homemade Wallpaper Remover That Is Earth Friendly

When you want to paint or wallpaper a room, you'll need to remove the old wallpaper first. To do so takes a lot of time, but most importantly it takes a good wallpaper remover. This remover breaks down the adhesive bonding the wallpaper to the wall. Yet often the wallpaper remover contains chemicals that are harmful to both you and the environment. You can make your own wallpaper remover, however, that is safe not only for you but for the planet as well.
  1. Creating Wallpaper Remover

    • Take a large bucket and pour hot water into the bucket. If you are doing an entire room, you'll want to fill half the bucket with hot water. Next, pour in the same amount of distilled white vinegar as you did water. If you poured in half a bucket of water, pour in half a bucket of distilled white vinegar. Stir the mixture up and either leave it in the bucket to use with a sponge, or dip a spray bottle into the bucket and fill it up. If you run out, mix together more. Keep adding hot water if the water begins to cool down. Warm or hot water works best at breaking down the wallpaper paste. Leave a window or door open to help circulate air and get rid of the strong vinegar odor.

    Removing Wallpaper

    • To use the wallpaper remover, first use a wallpaper scoring tool to punch holes in the wallpaper. This allows the wallpaper remover to soak underneath the wallpaper and help loosen the paste holding the wallpaper to the wall. Move the scoring tool in erratic circles until you've covered the entire wall. Next, spray the wallpaper remover onto the paper using a squirt bottle. Liberally coat a section and allow it time to sink in. Then use a wallpaper scraper or a putty knife to scrap the paper off. Peel loose pieces with your fingers, and spray more wallpaper remover onto stubborn spots that won't come loose. You can also soak a sponge in the wallpaper remover and dab it onto problem areas.
