How to Color in Loose Wallpaper Seams

If you have a stubborn seam that you can't cover with wallpaper, you can color it in to match the wallpaper with acrylic paint, which is water based and easy to use. The paint comes in a wide range of colors, which should allow you to match any color of wallpaper. An acrylic gloss medium can replicate a sheen, if your wallpaper has one, and clean-up is easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Acrylic colors (as necessary)
  • Nylon round bristle brush
  • Water
  • Acrylic gloss medium (optional)
  • Plastic plate or disposable palette
  • Cup
  • Bar of soap

Instructions

    • 1

Place a pea-sized amount of acrylic paint on the plate or palette in a color close to the wallpaper base color. Add color to create an exact match. Use black and white to darken and lighten, and other colors beside it on the color chart to alter it further, if necessary. For example, to cool a red or move it toward purple, add purple; to warm it up, add orange. Add a little at a time to get the mix precise.

    • 2

Add a few drops of water to the mixed color, stir it with the brush and apply it in smooth strokes to the seam. Keep the brush in a cup of water when you are not using it so it doesn't dry out.

    • 3

Check if you need to put a pattern over the base color. If you do, mix that color and apply over the base color once it is dry (about 30 minutes).

    • 4

Add a light layer of gloss medium directly out of the jar once the second layer is dry, if needed.

    • 5

Clean up by washing the palette and brush with soap and warm water. Place the brush in a can with the bristles up to dry.
