Removing wallpaper doesn't have to be a dreaded task. Although there are commercial wallpaper removal products available, they often contain ingredients that are unsafe for people and the planet. Instructions

    • 1

Cover the floor with dropcloths. Turn off the main power connection to the room you are working in and remove electrical outlets covers and switch plates. Place duct tape over the electrical outlets.

    • 2

Score the surface of the wallpaper with a wallpaper scoring tool. Make sporadic holes throughout the surface by holding the tool onto the wall and applying gentle pressure. These holes will allow the removal product to penetrate the backing and wallpaper adhesive.

    • 3

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of water as hot as you can stand it. Add 1 cup white vinegar to the bucket. Use a funnel to transfer the mixture from the bucket to a clean, empty spray bottle.

    • 4

Spray the entire wall with a generous coating of the vinegar solution. Let it sit on the wall for 10 to 20 minutes.

    • 5

Scrape the wallpaper off of the wall with a plastic scraper. Begin at the top of the wall and work your way to the bottom. Apply moderate pressure when scraping the wall, but take care not to damage the drywall underneath the wallpaper.

    • 6

Continue scraping until all the wallpaper, backing, and adhesive is gone. Add more vinegar solution as necessary.

    • 7

Wipe down the wall with a sponge and warm water to remove any residue left behind. Allow the wall to air-dry completely before priming, painting, or applying new wallpaper.
