The Best Way to Remove Wallpaper Paste From Drywall

Drywall, in one form or another, has been used in construction since ancient times and, along with plaster, is one of the popular materials for building walls. Drywall is more absorbent than plaster and can be damaged more easily. Care needs to be taken when removing wallpaper paste so as not to damage the wall. The paste gets a good grip on the drywall because of its absorbency and needs to be removed with a minimum of liquid and more elbow grease.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a solution you are comfortable using. Mix a commercial paste remover with water according to manufacturer's directions. Another choice is 2 to 3 tbs. of liquid dishwashing soap, or a heaping tbs. of baking soda, or 4 tbs. of fabric softener, mixed with a gallon of warm water.

    • 2

Use a sponge to apply the mix you choose to the paste left on the wall, working in a small area. Let the solution soak into the paste and gently scrape it away with a drywall scraper.

    • 3

Use a pole sander with 100-grit sandpaper, if there is any paste left on the wall.

    • 4

Sand with an electric sander, if the pole sander did not remove it completely.
