How do I Remove Wallpaper That Is Glued Directly to Sheetrock?

Wallpaper is a common alternative to painted walls. The adhesive paper is typically applied directly to drywall, or Sheetrock. The main downside of wallpaper is that it can be difficult to remove when the time comes to replace it. In many cases, if you simply pull on the wallpaper, it can also tear away the covering of the Sheetrock, which is difficult to cover up. A couple of common household items can help make the job easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a spray bottle 1/3 full with fabric softener. It doesn't have to be exactly 1/3 full, so use your best judgment.

    • 2

Fill the bottle the rest of the way with hot water. The water should be hot to the touch, but not boiling.

    • 3

Shake the bottle for 30 seconds to mix the ingredients together.

    • 4

Spray the mixture on the wall paper. Start in a top corner and saturate 3 square feet of wallpaper. Let the liquid soak in for two minutes.

    • 5

Grasp the corner of the wallpaper and peel it away from the wall.

    • 6

Repeat the process, working on one sheet of wallpaper at a time in 3-square-foot sections.
