How do I Remove Linoleum Glue From Hardwood Floors?

At one point, it was common for homes to have hardwood flooring throughout the entire house. As time moved on and style preferences changed, many hardwood floors were covered with linoleum. Some people who purchase older homes prefer the original look of the hardwood floors and remove the linoleum, which often leaves thick lines of unsightly glue. Removing the glue may seem like a daunting task, but it's much easier than you would think.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the floor with an even layer of towels.

    • 2

Fill a large pot with water. Put the pot on the stove at high heat until it comes to a boil.

    • 3

Pour the water directly on top of the towels. The heat and moisture will cause the glue to soften. Depending on the size of the floor, you may need to use multiple pots of water.

    • 4

Wipe the floors with the damp towels. Much of the glue should wipe up at this point without the need for scraping it off.

    • 5

Scrape any residual glue with a paint scraper. Be extremely cautious when doing this so you do not scrape the wood beneath. It's best to scrape along the grain of the wood as you're less likely to get caught on bumps or grooves.

    • 6

Put fans in the room at set them to their highest settings to dry the floor. If the floors stay moist for too long, the wood may warp.

    • 7

Check the floor after it dries to ensure you removed all of the glue. If necessary, scrape the remaining glue with the paint scraper.
