Natural Way to Remove Wallpaper

Wallpaper is a popular choice for a decorative wall covering as it comes in many designs, finishes and styles, but it presents complications when you are planning to replace or remove it completely. Traditional methods for removing wallpaper include the use of harsh chemical stripping agents and glue removal solvents that are a danger to your health and the environment. Remove wallpaper naturally when renovating a room to eliminate the dangers of chemical fumes in the work area.

  • Putty knife
  • Waterproof tarps
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • White distilled vinegar

      A putty knife can help you peel the wallpaper's top layer off.

      Scrape the top layer of the wallpaper off with a putty knife to reveal the white layer underneath that is adhered to the wall with a layer of glue. Push the putty knife under the edge of the paper and pull it off in large pieces.

      Lay a waterproof tarp at the base of the wall to protect your flooring.

      Fill a 5-gallon bucket with 1 cup of white distilled vinegar and 1 gallon of warm water.

      Dip a sponge into the vinegar mixture and apply the mixture to the wall generously. Allow the mixture to soak into the paper for 2 to 3 minutes.

      Scrape the softened paper backing off the wall with your putty knife.
