How to Remove Wallpaper Border Adhesive

Wallpaper border normally runs along the top area of walls next to the ceiling, but can also run in the middle of a wall. After removing a wallpaper border, the adhesive may remain on the wall. The glue can appear crusty and hard and require a solvent to soften it for easy removal. Without softening the glue, you could damage the drywall when trying to chisel the hard adhesive.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a spray bottle with hot water. Add 1 tbsp. baking soda to the water. Screw on the top and shake the bottle to disburse the baking soda.

    • 2

Spray the baking soda solution generously over the wallpaper border adhesive. Allow the mixture to remain on the adhesive for 15 minutes to loosen the glue.

    • 3

Wipe the glue from the wall with a damp sponge. If the adhesive remains on the wall, reapply the baking soda solution and wait 20 minutes.

    • 4

Rinse the sponge in a bucket of warm water as you remove the glue from the wall to keep from redistributing the glue back onto the wall.

    • 5

Wipe the walls dry with a clean cloth after removing all adhesive.
