How to Remove Wallpaper Using Fabric Softener

After removing wallpaper, a hard layer of paste remains attached to the wall. The paste is soft when applying to the wallpaper and then to the wall, but hardens as it dries. Returning the paste to its softened state allows for easier removal. Fabric softener contains ingredients that soften the paste without harming the drywall or paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Score vinyl wallpaper with a scoring tool so the fabric softener solution can reach the adhesive.

    • 2

Fill a large spray bottle with 2 parts hot water to 1 part fabric softener.

    • 3

Spray the scored wallpaper generously with the fabric softener solution. Allow the mixture to remain on the wallpaper for 30 minutes, giving it time to seep behind the wallpaper and loosen the adhesive.

    • 4

Pull the wallpaper from the wall starting at the bottom. Push a putty knife gently under the wallpaper if needed. Slowly pull the wallpaper from the wall. Use the putty knife to scrape under areas of wallpaper that do not release easily from the wall.

    • 5

Wipe fabric softener solution and loosened adhesive from the walls with a damp sponge. Rinse the sponge periodically in a bucket of warm water as you remove the glue from the wall.

    • 6

Dry the wall with clean cloths after rinsing.
