Score the wallpaper with a wallpaper scoring tool. Take the tool and apply pressure in various spots along the surface of the wallpaper. This will allow the fabric softener to penetrate the backing and glue.
Fill a bucket with 1 qt. of hot water. Add one capful of Downey. Mix up the water and fabric softener well, then fill an empty spray bottle with the mixture.
Spray a generous amount of the Downey mixture onto the wallpaper. Work in sections of about four or five feet. Start at the bottom of the wall and work your way up. Let the mixture sit on the wallpaper for 15 to 20 minutes.
Scrape the loosened wallpaper from the wall with a putty knife, then use your hands to remove large strips of the paper. Apply more of Downey solution to the same area, then scrape with the putty knife to remove any backing or glue left on the wall.
Continue the process, working in four or five foot sections, of spraying on the Downey solution, letting it sit, then scraping with a putty knife until all of the wallpaper has been removed. Wash the walls with clean, warm water and a sponge to remove any residue.
