How to Remove Wallpaper by Scoring

If you need to remove the wallpaper in your home, the best method depends on the material of the wall beneath the paper. Scoring is one alternative, and is accomplished with a scoring tool that makes small holes in the wallpaper prior to using wallpaper remover, allowing the remover to soak in and loosen the adhesive. Scoring your wallpaper can be a messy process, but is generally effective when it comes to getting rid of old or nonporous paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread towels out on the floor, pushing them up against the wall to protect the base. Tape any electrical outlets to protect their surfaces.

    • 2

Roll the wallpaper scorer evenly over the entire wall, which will perforate the surface.

    • 3

Put on rubber gloves and mix the wallpaper remover with water (as instructed on the remover bottle; the amount will vary by brand).

    • 4

Dip a paint roller in the wallpaper remover and apply it to a small section of the wallpaper. Scrape the wallpaper off with the putty knife, continuing to work in small sections. (If you dampen the entire wall at once, parts may dry before you can scrape the paper off.)

Wash off any remaining clumps of wallpaper and adhesive with a sponge and clean, warm water.
