How to Protect Wallpaper at a Sink

Hanging wallpaper in a bathroom is a quick way to add style and color. However, most wallpaper isn't waterproof and is easily damaged if it becomes wet, which is a problem for wallpaper around sinks. If the wallpaper continually comes in contact with water, it can experience mold problems, as well as peeling. Applying waterproof decorator's varnish to the wallpaper can protect it from water and the damage it can cause.

Instructions

Pour decorator's varnish into a paint pan. Place a small paint roller into the varnish. Rub the roller on the textured area of the pan to remove the excess paint. If you'd rather apply the varnish with a paint brush, dip the brush into the varnish can. Rub the bristles on the ledge of the can to remove any excess.

Roll the roller back and forth around the sink to apply the varnish. Dip the roller back into the varnish when it appears dry to add more. If using a paint brush, move the brush back and forth on the wallpaper to apply the varnish. Add more varnish to the brush as needed.

Apply another coat of varnish once the first is dry, which usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the brand. Use a second coat if you feel the wallpaper around the sink is constantly wet and needs extra protection.
