How to Remove Oxidized Metal Siding

Oxidization occurs when metal siding gets scratched and moisture penetrates the protective coating. Oxidization does not affect the removal process of vertical or horizontally installed metal siding. Oxidization occurs mostly in coastal areas and regions with high air humidity points. Nails and screw fasteners hold metal siding to the sub-wall material. Once removed, the siding will be easy to remove. Due to the popularity of vinyl siding, metal siding isn't as common as it once was.

Instructions

  1. Vertical Metal Siding

    • 1

Remove the screws holding the trim work around the wall of siding with an electric screw gun and a hex-head screwdriver bit. Take down each piece of trim one at a time.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the siding to the wall with an electric screw gun. Work from the bottom of the panel to the top.

    • 3

Pry the metal panel siding away from the wall with an angled pry bar. The panel may fall away from the wall as soon as the screws are free, but if not, prying is required.

    Horizontal Lap Siding

    • 4

Slip the blade of a putty knife in the joint between two pieces of lap siding.

    • 5

Place the angled end of a pry bar on the putty knife blade and slide it up under the lap siding.

    • 6

Pry the siding away from the wall to separate it from the one its attached to. Pry every 2 feet along the length of the piece of metal siding.

    • 7

Grab the siding and pull downward to rip it away from the nail fasteners. Repeat this process until all pieces of metal siding have been removed from the wall.
