How to Keep Drywall Tape From Bubbling

Drywall tape will bubble if the first coat of joint compound is thin or if you remove too much compound when smoothing the tape. Noticing a bubble after the first and second coats of compound have been applied can take time to fix. If you apply the joint compound correctly and apply the drywall tape properly, you can avoid bubbles in the drywall tape.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the drywall seam from the top to the bottom. Use the scissors to cut the length of drywall tape needed for the seam.

    • 2

Apply joint compound at least 1/8 inch thick to the drywall seam using the 6-inch putty knife. Spread the compound on smoothly in order to avoid leaving ridges.

    • 3

Start applying the tape to the bottom of the seam and work upwards. While applying the tape with one hand, use the other hand to gently and very lightly press it into place so it seats in the compound.

    • 4

Clean the putty knife with water. Place the clean putty knife at the top of the drywall tape. While holding the very end of the tape with one hand, glide the putty knife down the tape. Press down so that any excess compound under the tape oozes out the sides of the tape. You want to end up with smooth tape free of uneven spots. Clean off any excess compound with a rag.

    • 5

Apply another 1/8 inch layer of compound over the tape after you have smoothed the tape into the first layer of compound. Be generous with the compound and apply the compound in one long motion instead of short motions. Allow the compound to dry overnight.

Apply another layer of compound on the second and third days, each time allowing the compound to dry before adding the next coat. On the fourth day, gently sand the compound with 120 grit sandpaper to smooth any lines or rough spots.
