How to Measure Wall Insulation

Fiberglass wall insulation is installed into the spaces between every pair of studs on the wall, while the wall is open for new construction or remodeling. It comes in rolls, and is manufactured to a depth and width to fit snugly inside the space between a standard stud configuration of 16 inches. Since the heights of walls vary, you need to measure and cut the strips to fit your particular layout.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your ladder in front of the open-stud wall. Climb it.

    • 2

Open your tape measure, extending the end of it toward the floor. Set the end of it next to one of the wall studs, on the inside of the wall.

    • 3

Hold the other end of the tape measure to the side of the stud at the top. Take the measurement. It will normally be between eight and 10 feet. Climb down.

    • 4

Pull the tape measure open on the floor, to about a foot longer than the measurement you took. Lock it open so it stays there.

    • 5

Roll out your fiberglass insulation next to the tape measure, with the end of the strip lined up with the end of the tape. Lay a square across the width of the fiberglass strip, at an inch or two past the measurement you took.

    • 6

Press the square firmly down to compress the fiberglass so you can cut all the way through it. Cut it with your razor knife. The piece is now ready to be stapled into the space between the first two studs. Repeat for each space.
