Taping & Spackling Tips

Over time a wall may crack because of a house settling or someone striking it with a door. Regardless of what has caused the issue, it can be fixed with Spackle and drywall tape. The project is relatively simple for any homeowner and can help maintain the value of your home.
  1. Clean the Crack

    • For the tape to stick securely, you need to clean the crack. Sand it down to the plaster or skim coat. Use a knife or a screwdriver to remove debris. If you sanded, wipe the area with a damp cloth and let it dry overnight.

    Taping Tips

    • Do not rush taping. The tape needs to be flat and taut. If it is not flat to the surface, it will cause the Spackle to pop off over a short time. Cut the tape prior to placing it on the wall if it is a smaller section. Make sure that you are also at least 2 inches above the start and end of the crack. Place the top end above the crack and apply the tape firmly.

    Spackle

    • Make sure that the Spackle is applied in a coat thick enough to cover the tape. It needs to be at least an eighth of an inch thick. Feather it with the putty knife to the rest of the wall. This will make it blend better.

    Sanding

    • Allow the Spackle to dry and then sand it. Use a sandpaper with a grit of 160 or higher. When you are sanding the Spackle, make sure you are stopping regularly and checking the feel of the Spackle. It needs to be smooth and as close to the original surface as possible. Take your time when you are doing this. If you sand too much, you will expose the tape and have to start all over again.
