How to Remove Moldy Drywall

Whether you have water damage or just a humidity problem, mold is not something you want growing in your home. If you discover mold on your walls, you must remove it by cleaning the surface. However, if you discover that the mold is in the drywall material, that part of the wall itself will need to be replaced. The task can be small or large depending on the damage, which means it could take anywhere from an hour to a couple days to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a disposable drop cloth to cover flooring and furniture. Tape plastic sheeting to other walls, ceilings and in doorways to keep mold spores off of other surfaces.

    • 2

Cut into the wall to remove the moldy drywall. Knock a hole in the wall with a hammer near the mold, and insert a jigsaw to cut out the drywall. If it is just a small area, cut several inches out from above and below the moldy section, and cut the sides out all the way to the studs. You need to remove the drywall this far to the sides to make installation of new drywall easier.

    • 3

Cut out entire sections of drywall between studs if the mold covers a large area of the wall. Pry it off of the studs where it is attached.

    • 4

Unscrew drywall screws sticking out of the studs with a drill.

    • 5

Place molded drywall into garbage bags before removing it from the room. If you have a window to the outside in the room, use it to set the bags out of the house. Otherwise, wipe them down first with a damp rag before taking them out of the room and then take them outside.
