How to Fix Toggle Bolt Holes

Redecorating a living space can bring new life to an area. If you choose not to hang something the same shape in the exact location as before, you could be left with unsightly holes in your wall from toggle bolts or other wall hangers. Do not let that deter you from bringing a fresh look to a room, because filling those holes is a simple task that requires only a few supplies, which will come in handy the next time you decide to create a new look.

Instructions

    • 1

Closely examine the hole to see whether any paper or sheet-rock is protruding out from the hole. Press any loose or protruding sheet-rock and paper back into the hole, or trim it with a utility knife so that the hole has a slightly beveled edge. If debris from the hole is left in place, it will be visible and the repaired surface will not be smooth.

    • 2

Dip the putty knife into the joint compound and apply it to the wall. Move the putty knife in a straight line across the hole at about a 35-degree angle from the wall. Swipe over the hole from different directions until the hole is filled with joint compound and no excess compound is left around the outside of the hole. The filled area should be flush with the surrounding area of the wall. Let the compound dry.

    • 3

Apply another coat of joint compound, as you did in step 2. The joint compound shrinks as it dries and will leave a small divot that will need to be filled. Allow to dry.

    • 4

Examine the hole for shrinkage and apply another thin coat if necessary. When the joint compound is completely dry, wipe over the hole gently with a damp sponge in a long sweeping motion. This will level the surface and blend the repair into the surrounding area of the wall. Touch up the repaired hole with paint, or repaint the room as desired.
