How to Fix Water Spots on Drywall

Water spots on drywall are caused by leaky plumbing or water from the outside compromising the structure of the house. The water soaks into the drywall and leaves mineral deposits that discolor the surface. Most water spots on drywall are repaired by using a stain-blocking paint. There are many brands of stain-blocking paint that can be purchased from a hardware or home improvement store. The repair is completed using a straightforward procedure with minimal effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a box fan in front of the stain on the wall and leave it on overnight. This will ensure that the wall is completely dry before an attempt is made to paint it.

    • 2

Brush on a stain-blocking paint using a 2-inch paintbrush. Using a larger paintbrush for spots on the wall makes it harder to achieve a blended look. Ensure that the entire affected area of the wall is covered with stain blocker. Brush on a thick coat of the stain blocker. Allow the paint to dry per the instructions on the can.

Paint the repaired area of the wall with regular paint that matches the rest of the wall. Brush on the paint with the 2-inch paintbrush and cover all the stain blocker with the regular paint. Blend the edges of the repaired area into the rest of the wall by lightly brushing it with the paintbrush with very little paint on it.
