How to Cover Torn Drywall

If you don't repair areas of torn drywall, you risk those spots developing blisters. Drywall tears result, for example, from wallpaper being removed from it, furniture scraping against it or an object that was taped to the wall surface, such as a poster, being removed. What you find behind the tear is usually a ragged surface, resembling cardboard. The repair will take longer than one day, or one sitting, as you need to apply new drywall compound, and allow it to sufficiently dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut away any loose or jagged pieces of paper that stick out around the torn area of drywall. Use a utility knife.

    • 2

Apply oil-based Kilz primer/sealer on the torn area, and just outside the border of the tear, to seal the surface. Use a paintbrush to apply the primer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to allow the primer/sealer to completely dry. Use Kilz Odorless Primer/Sealer if odor is a concern.

    • 3

Apply drywall joint compound to the tear, covering the spot with a 4-inch or 6-inch taping knife, according to the size of the torn area. Allow the joint compound sufficient time to dry, which is usually about 24 hours. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct drying time.

    • 4

Put on a dust mask and eye protection. Smooth the surface of the dry joint compound, using 120-grit sandpaper wrapped around a wood block. Apply a second layer of joint compound on the spot, using a 10-inch taping knife. Allow the layer time to dry.

    • 5

Put on a dust mask and eye protection. Sand the layer of joint compound to a smooth finish, using 120-grit sandpaper wrapped around a wood block.

    • 6

Apply the oil-based Kilz primer/sealer to the smoothly sanded drywall, using a paintbrush. Allow it to dry. Use a paintbrush to paint the drywall spot to match the surrounding wall, with oil-based paint.
