How to Remove Wonderboard

Wonderboard is manufactured by Durock as a wall board for use in wet locations such as kitchens and bathrooms. The body of Wonderboard is composed of bits of concrete pressed together and held in place with mesh. Because Wonderboard has a tendency to crumble when cut or sliced, the process for removing it can be quite messy.

Instructions

    • 1

Place plastic sheeting on the ground beneath where the Wonderboard is installed. If this Wonderboard is over a bathtub, for example, cover the tub with the sheeting to protect it.

    • 2

Locate the screws holding the Wonderboard in place.. They may be hidden by mortar or joint compound and be hard to spot. Take a putty knife and chip or scrape away as much of the mortar from the edges as possible, in order to find the screws.

    • 3

Insert a screwdriver or drill with a screwdriver bit into the top of the screw. Set the drill to reverse, if using one. Turn the screw counter-clockwise until it comes out of the Wonderboard.

    • 4

Unscrew the rest of the screws around the edges in the same manner until they are all removed. Brace the board with your hand or have an assistant hold it in place while you work.

    • 5

Knock the Wonderboard down with a masonry hammer if you cannot locate the screws. Start in the center of the board and begin pulling it off the wall once you've created a hole. Try not to damage the wall studs as you work. Once the pieces of the board have been removed, unscrew the screws in the studs.

Clean up any debris with a wet/dry vacuum.
