How to Fix Metal Corners on a Wall

The outer corners of walls are typically protected by metal strips. The strips are shaped to form a right angle down their length, so that they easily fit over the corners. You attach the metal to the corners with drywall screws, which you drill through pre-made holes in the metal. Afterward, the metal is covered with compound to make the wall look seamless. Over time the corners get worn down and abused, which results in loose or visible strips. You can easily fix this with a few supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Razor blade
  • Drill
  • 220-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the drywall compound along the edges of the metal piece with a razor blade. In addition, use the blade to scrape off the surface of the metal so that you are able to see the screws.

    • 2

Unscrew the screws with the aid of a drill.

    • 3

Pull the metal strip off the corner of the wall and sand down the wall surface with a 220-grit paper. This will smooth the wall where you pulled out the strip.

    • 4

Place a new strip over the corner and drill drywall screws through the holes to secure it.

    • 5

Spread a thin layer of drywall compound over the metal strip. Use a 4-inch taping knife to apply the compound.

    • 6

Let the material dry for 12 hours, and then sand it smooth.

    • 7

Apply a second coating of drywall compound over the strip. Use a 6-inch taping knife and spread it out from the corner on both sides. Thin the compound closer to the wall surface as you move away from the corner. Let the surface dry for 12 more hours, and then sand it smooth.

Paint the corner to match the rest of the wall. Use a paintbrush and make long even strokes.
