How to Repair a Wall From a Broken Towel Rod

A towel rod connects to a wall either with screws that are anchored to the wall or with caulk or cement. In either case, if the towel rod pulls off the wall, it is most likely going to damage the wall. Whether or not the towel rod is being reinstalled, the damage must be repaired. By following a straightforward procedure and using the correct materials, the damage will disappear.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a plastic drop cloth on the floor to catch wall debris that will fall in the process of the repair.

    • 2

Cut loose plaster or drywall from around the damaged area using a utility knife. Use a gentle scraping motion with the knife to remove loose pieces until the edges around the damaged area consist of solid wall.

    • 3

Fill the depressions and holes with joint compound spread with a 6-inch drywall knife. Smooth the joint compound with the knife until it fills the holes to the same level as the rest of the wall. Let the joint compound dry for 24 hours.

    • 4

Sand the repaired area with a drywall sanding sponge to remove ridges and high spots. Apply another coat of joint compound if the repaired area is still not even with the rest of the wall. Let the joint compound dry and sand smooth.

    • 5

Paint the repaired area with touch-up paint that matches the rest of the wall. Use a 2-inch paintbrush and blend the paint into the rest of the wall around the repaired area.
