How to Use Paper Tape or Spackling Compound for a Crack on the Inside of a Wall

Wall cracks are an eyesore that can can have a number of different causes. Leaks will often result in cracks over time or the building may just be settling with age and cracks are the result. Repairing a wall crack can greatly improve the visual appeal of the room when the repair is done correctly. Using paper tape or spackling compound is often an effective repair method, especially in drywall, that will help make the crack disappear.

  • Putty knife
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Pole sander

      Apply a small amount of spackle to the crack with a putty knife and use the knife to spread the compound down the length of the crack.

      Press the tape into the spackling compound before it dries. The paper tape should be specifically designed for drywall reinforcement. Use the putty knife to further smooth out the spackle around and over the tape to prevent lumps from forming.

      Add more spackle to the crack once the initial layer has dried until the crack is completely filled.

      Sand the repair area with fine-grit sandpaper and a pole sander to smooth out the spackle until it is flush with the wall and the crack is no longer visible.
