How to Get Dried Thinset Off of Sheetrock

When replacing wall tiles, it is often necessary to remove the old layer of dried thinset mortar from sheetrock or other drywall before you can add the new tiles. Thinset is the grayish-white mortar that is used to make the tiles stick to the drywall. There is no simple trick for removing the thinset once it dries because it contains cement. But with hard scraping, you should be able to accomplish the task well enough to cover the area with new tiles.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape off as much thinset as possible using a 5-in-1 tool. Avoid creating gouges in the drywall. You may need to scrape off some of the paper on the outside of the drywall to remove the thinset. Use a razor scraper if necessary.

    • 2

Fill in any large holes or gouges with joint compound. If you plan to lay new tiles, the new thinset will fill in smaller holes and gouges.

    • 3

Spread a thin layer of joint compound over the area and smooth it if you plan to paint over it. Sand the area before painting.
