How to Fix Peeling Sheetrock

Paint looks awful when applied to an imperfect surface. To achieve a high quality wall finish, repair Sheetrock problems before applying primer, paint or wallpaper. The paper wrapping on drywall Sheetrock sometimes peels away from the rock due to manufacturing defects, damage from transport or moisture. Sometimes it simply peels back during installation. Builders are more likely to repair rather than replace peeling Sheetrock. Taking time to fix Sheetrock with peeled paper saves time and money and ensures a good finish after the painting.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the paper that has peeled away from the Sheetrock. Press one hand to the paper 1 inch from the end of the peeled section and tear away the loose paper with the other hand. Placing one hand near the damage prevents the peeling from spreading.

    • 2

Sand the damaged area. Start where the paper peeled away and work to the edge of the remaining paper.

    • 3

Clean the sanded area with a tack cloth to remove sanding dust. Wipe with the tack cloth starting from the bare Sheetrock moving onto the remaining paper approximately 1 foot beyond the damage.

    • 4

Apply a thin layer of drywall mud starting from 1 foot outside the damaged area and moving across the damaged area to 1 foot past the damage on the opposite side. Use a 12 -inch drywall finishing knife to spread the mud. Starting from the undamaged area and spreading mud beyond the damage prevents a visible bulge from forming. The extra area allows the repair to blend into the rest of the wall. Allow the mud to dry for the time suggested on the package.

Sand the dried mud with fine-grit sandpaper on a sanding block. Sand only until the repair blends with the rest of the wall. Sanding too deep will expose the paper's edge. Remove sanding dust with a tack cloth.
