How to Fix Dents on Sheet Rock Walls

Sheetrock is a brand name for drywall, a common building material used for constructing walls and ceilings. Drywall consists of compressed gypsum sandwiched between sheets of heavy paper. Although it is durable, dents and dings can appear on drywall due to regular family activities. Fixing a dent in drywall is an easy repair job that you can tackle yourself without having to call a professional.

Things You'll Need

  • Sandpaper
  • Soft cloth or dry paintbrush
  • Joint compound
  • Putty knife, approximately the same size or slightly larger than the dented area.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the dented area lightly with sandpaper. Roughening the surface helps the patching material to better adhere to the wall. Wipe or brush away any small particles.

    • 2

Dip the putty knife halfway into the joint compound and scoop out a generous amount of the material.

    • 3

Spread the joint compound across the dented area of the drywall, completely covering the dent in one smooth motion. Use the edge of the putty knife to skim off the excess joint compound so that the dented area is full and flush with the wall's surface.

    • 4

Allow the joint compound to dry. This normally takes an hour or so if the patch is only a few inches wide. Apply a second coat if the patch appears dented or dimpled, as joint compound may shrink as it dries. Skim off the excess until the patch is flush with the wall's surface, and allow it to dry.

Lightly sand the area until smooth. Wipe or brush away the small particles. Prime and paint the patched area.
