How to Cut a Wall Panel in the Bathroom

Bathroom wall panels might be standard drywall, greenboard drywall or even cement board. If you are unsure of the material of your bathroom wall panel, you can cut through it with a reciprocating saw. The problem you may encounter is that you must cut through the wall panel without cutting through wires or plumbing pipes behind the wall. Since there are no blades manufactured for this process, it is necessary to fabricate your own wall panel cutting blade.

Things You'll Need

  • Old reciprocating saw blade
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Small scrap piece of wall panel

Instructions

    • 1

Insert an old cutting blade into a reciprocating saw. Grab the saw body with one hand, and fully extend the blade with your free hand. Place a small scrap piece of wall panel against the front of the blade shoe, and trace the thickness of the wall panel onto the side of the blade. If you do not have a scrap piece of wall panel, make a mark on the blade half an inch from the face of the blade shoe.

    • 2

Remove the blade from the reciprocating saw. Cut the blade at the mark with a pair of sharp tin snips. The blades for reciprocating are thin so you can cut them in this manner. Insert the blade into the reciprocating saw, and install the battery into the saw if it is a cordless model. If you have a corded model, plug the power cord into an outlet near the work area.

    • 3

Trace the cut line onto the wall panel in the bathroom with a pencil. Use a straightedge to make the lines straight when making your marks.

    • 4

Push the blade into the wall panel until the blade shoe of the saw is flat against the wall. If cutting through cement board, you might have to rock the blade up and down to insert it into the panel.

    • 5

Squeeze the power trigger on your saw and cut the wall panel along the cut line tracing. Once you finish cutting, pull the saw away from the wall. Pull the cut piece out of the wall.
