How to Cut Bathroom Drywall

Cuts in the bathroom drywall are usually made before the drywall is installed. However, when adding electrical boxes or creating an access area for the plumbing, it is necessary to cut the drywall after it is installed. Cutting bathroom drywall is similar to cutting drywall before installing it on the studs. Because of the wires and plumbing behind the wall, you do not want to use long blade saws to cut the drywall. The only tool necessary to cut bathroom drywall is a simple utility knife.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the area on the bathroom drywall that you want to cut with a pencil and straight edge.

    • 2

Insert a sharp blade into a utility knife. A dull blade will rip through the drywall, causing tears where you do not want them.

    • 3

Make a shallow cut at the marked cut line with the utility knife. The sharp blade should cut through the paint and paper backing of the drywall without tearing them.

    • 4

Extend the blade fully and lock it with the thumb lock on top of the utility knife body. Insert the blade into the cut line, pushing it entirely through the drywall.

    • 5

Cut through the drywall with the utility knife along the cut line. Pry one edge of the cut piece of drywall away from the wall with the utility knife blade. Grab the edge of the cut piece of drywall with your fingers and pull it completely away from the wall.
