How to Stop Recurring Cracks in Interior Walls

Interior walls are generally made of drywall. As the house settles, your walls move slightly. This causes cracks to appear in the wall. If the wall was not properly built, cracks may appear frequently and will reoccur. You can temporarily patch cracks, or you can take a few extra steps to ensure the wall stops cracking. If you notice diagonal cracks, or cracks that crisscross, call a contractor to have a look at your foundation to ensure that there is not a more serious issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a groove in the crack using a utility knife. Make the crack even on each side.

    • 2

Vacuum in between the cracks to remove any debris.

    • 3

Hammer a nail into the wall on each side of the crack into the wood behind. This holds the drywall in place.

    • 4

Spread joint compound over the crack using a putty knife. Feather out the putty away from the crack to make the patch as smooth as possible.

    • 5

Place paper drywall tape over the wet putty and push down. Wait 24 hours for the putty to dry on the tape.

    • 6

Apply a second coat of drywall compound over the tape, feathering out. Allow the compound to dry.

    • 7

Apply a third coat of putty and allow to dry.

    • 8

Sand the wall smooth using a large, 80-grit sanding block. Clean the area and paint.
