How to Patch Mortar

Mortar is a durable masonry substance placed between bricks or stone blocks as an adhesive during wall or structure building. It is commonly seen as a lighter-colored and recessed series of lines running horizontally and vertically over a wall. It will not last forever without maintenance. Patching broken, cracked or non-existent mortar between bricks will extend the life of the remaining mortar and wall. All tools and materials needed to patch mortar are available at most home improvement and hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix dry mortar compound with water in a bucket and stir thoroughly. The mortar for patching is best when slightly thick, so add water slowly and monitor for consistency. Roll some of the mortar into a small ball; if it holds its shape easily, it is ready.

    • 2

Use a hammer and small chisel to remove loose mortar between bricks that isn't easily dislodged. Give areas where you aren't sure about the mortar strength a light tap with the hammer and chisel to see if large chunks easily break free.

    • 3

Rub a small wire brush over the areas requiring patching to remove remaining loose mortar or other debris.

    • 4

Load a small trowel with the thick mortar and press it into a gap between bricks where the mortar has broken up. Force the mortar in tightly and try to push it against the edges to get a strong bond with the existing mortar.

    • 5

Fill large gaps by building up the mortar in multiple layers. Fill the first layer and allow it to dry for at least one hour before laying the next layer over the top of the first.

    • 6

Smooth the new mortar with your thumb or a clean cloth to ensure it matches the rest of the mortar lines. When dry, use the wire brush to scrape away mortar that got onto the bricks.
