How to Fill Foam Into Old Cinder Walls

If your home or basement has walls made of cinder blocks, your heating and cooling bills are probably rather expensive. Cinder block walls are notorious energy wasters because there is no foam insulation inside the blocks. One solution to this problem is to inject insulation foam into the cavities of the wall. With the right kind of foam insulation, you will only have to drill a few holes, as opposed to many if you use quick-drying foam.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Power drill
  • Masonry bit, 1/2-inch diameter
  • Tape measure
  • Insulation foam gun
  • Slow or delayed-foaming insulation

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of safety goggles and work gloves.

    • 2

Insert a 1/2-inch diameter masonry bit into a power drill.

    • 3

Drill a hole at the top of the wall, above each row of cells of the cinder blocks.

    • 4

Measure the height of your wall. The recommended amount of foam you use is usually determined by how tall your wall is. Check the product instructions to find out how much foam to inject into each row of cinder block cells.

    • 5

Place the tube end of the insulation foam gun into the first hole. Inject the recommended amount of foam liquid into the hole. Use delayed-foaming insulation. The foam liquid will run down into the bottom of the cinder blocks, and then begin expanding as it rises. If you use a quick-expanding foam, you will have to drill a hole in every single cinder block.

Repeat step 5 for each row of cinder block cells. Paint over the holes if you want a finished look to the wall.
