How to Seal Masonry Ties Through Foam Board

Foam board is a type of rigid insulation that you can install in a basement or interior wall of your home to increase energy efficiency. If you are installing foam board over masonry ties there will be a void or cavity behind the foam board. Sealing all of the gaps between the masonry ties requires the use of a type of blown insulation that is composed of cellulose.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the wall where you need to install the foam board with the tape measure and make a note of the measurement. Measure the width of the foam board and make a note of the measurement.

    • 2

Divide the width of the wall by the width of the foam board. This gives you the number of foam board pieces needed to cover the wall and masonry ties.

    • 3

Apply construction adhesive to the surface of the foam board with the caulk gun.

    • 4

Position a sheet of the foam board insulation over a masonry tie. Press on the foam board to adhere the construction adhesive. Repeat this step to cover all of the masonry ties with the foam board.

    • 5

Apply a bead of caulk along the seams where two pieces of the foam board meet to create a seal. Allow the construction adhesive to dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Drill a hole at the top of the wall between the masonry ties using the power drill with an attachment for a hole saw.

    • 7

Place the nozzle of the blower hose over the hole you drilled in the wall. Turn on the blower and begin filling the cavity between the masonry ties with insulation.

    • 8

Remove the nozzle from the wall when the cavity is full. Fill the hole with spray foam and then scrape away the excess with a putty knife.
