How to Install Kneewall Rails

A kneewall is a type of short wall typically up to 3 feet in height. This type of wall is common for older homes with a steep roof line that does not allow for a full second story. However, this type of wall is also known as a pony wall or half wall and is used as a room divider. If there are elderly people that live in your house or a handicapped person that has trouble walking you can install a hand rail.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure down 2 1/2 inches from the top end of the kneewall with the tape measure. Make a mark with the pencil. Repeat this step on the other end of the wall.

    • 2

Run a chalk line between both marks. Pull tight and then snap the chalk line to put a straight line on the wall.

    • 3

Locate the studs in the kneewall using the stud finder. Mark the location of each stud with the pencil.

    • 4

Place a bracket for the hand rail on the chalk line at the location of a stud. Mark the mounting holes on the wall. Drill pilot holes in the wall with the power drill. Repeat this step for the other brackets.

    • 5

Align the bracket-mounting holes with the pilot holes drilled into the wall. Secure the brackets onto the wall with screws. Place the hand rail on top of the brackets.

    • 6

Drill pilot holes into the bottom of the hand rail. Secure the hand rail to the brackets with screws.
