How to Remove Mirrored Tiles From Walls

Mirrored wall tiles look similar to traditional ceramic tiles, except they have a reflective surface. These tiles can be used to create artistic designs or cover an entire wall. While mirrored tiles mount with adhesive tape secured to the back, they are often a challenge to remove. Detaching them from the wall surface always causes damage to the wall that requires repair.

  • Dropcloth
  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Hacksaw blade or spackling knife

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a thick dropcloth over the floor to protect it from glass shards. Put on safety glasses and thick work gloves to protect yourself.

    • 2

Place a hacksaw blade or spackling knife at the top of the uppermost mirrored tile. Slide it behind the tile, and move it in a side-to-side motion to begin cutting through the adhesive strips behind the tile.

    • 3

Continue cutting downward approximately 1 inch until you cut through the top adhesive strips.

    • 4

Set the saw aside, and grasp the upper corners of the mirrored tile. Pull it gently out, away from the wall. If the tile begins to come off, simply pull it from the wall. Otherwise, hold the tile with one hand and cut through the remaining two tape strips using the saw. Repeat to remove each tile.

    • 5

Apply 2 to 3 tbsp. of mineral spirits to a rag, and wipe the wall with firm pressure to remove any remaining adhesive from the tape.

    • 6

Scoop up 1 to 2 tbsp. of joint compound with a putty knife. Apply the joint compound to the wall in areas where the drywall paper tore off or where holes exist. Wait until the compound dries, and sand it with medium-grit sandpaper.
