How to Cut Drywall for Speaker Wire Concealment

Drywall is a common construction material for interior walls. Made of crushed gypsum compressed between paper, drywall cuts easily for routing electrical wiring or installing speaker wires out of sight. Unlike electrical wiring, which requires an opening in the drywall for installing a wiring box and socket, speaker wire can be installed through a comparatively small hole and routed to another location behind the wall with a fish tape. Use a cordless drill to make the openings and minimize cutting into the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch off the circuit breaker that controls the electric circuits in the room where you will be cutting the drywall.

    • 2

Mark the two points on the wall with a pencil where the speaker wire will insert and emerge, such as behind the audio speaker in the room and the wall space at the rear of the stereo system in an entertainment cabinet.

    • 3

Drill a hole at each pencil mark no more than 1-1/2 inches in diameter. Hold the drill steady to prevent slipping with the tool and damaging the drywall surface.

    • 4

Insert the tip of the fish tape into one hole and glide the flexible metal behind the drywall to the second hole.

    • 5

Push the end of a speaker wire through the loop at the end of the fish tape when you see the fish tape emerge at the second hole. Tie the wire securely to the loop.

    • 6

Pull the fish tape back in the direction you started from, pulling the speaker wire along behind the drywall.

    • 7

Remove the fish tape from the hole in the drywall and untie the wire. Pull the wire out from the wall at least 2 feet to prevent the wire from slipping back inside the drywall where you will be unable to reach it.
