Do it Yourself Slump Block & Plaster Repair

Holes in plaster and slump bricks can seem like daunting repairs. Both plaster walls and slump bricks are made from one large piece of cement or plaster. When a hole appears, it is possible to repair it without having to replace all of the wall or even a large chunk of the original surface. All you have to do is smooth the edges of the original hole and fill the hole with a replacement piece of concrete or plaster.

Instructions

  1. Slump Block

    • 1

Put on safety goggles and a dust mask. Drill several holes into the surface of the broken slump block. Chip away the block face with a sledgehammer and brickface.

    • 2

Measure the opening of the block. Cut off the face from a new slump block using the brickset and hammer.

    • 3

Apply a layer of mortar to the sides of the new slump block. Fit the brick into the opening. Cover all cracks with another layer of mortar using a trowel. Allow the mortar to cure for 24 hours.

    Plaster

    • 4

Fit a piece of plaster over the damaged area. Trace around the outline of the hole and cut it out with a sharp knife.

    • 5

Fit the piece of plasterboard into the opening. Screw screws diagonally from the original plaster into the plasterboard piece to secure the board in place. You can also use painter's tape to secure the plasterboard.

    • 6

Spread a layer of cormice adhesive over the plasterboard and about 1 inch beyond the edges of the patched area. Allow the adhesive to dry, then apply a second coat. Allow the patch to dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Sand the patched area smooth and paint over the wall as normal.
