How to Pin Granite Panels

If you work with granite counter-top panels, it is simple to pin them, so long as you are careful. You just drill, pin and seal. Granite wall panels, on the other hand, are handled with heavy anchors or adhesives, depending upon whether they are load-bearing or a veneer. Either way, pinning granite wall panels is not recommended. Also, if you use a quality piece of granite, you should not use a masonry drill bit on any exposed surface. Masonry drill bits are designed for soft stones. They are likely to chip or create cracks in hard stones like granite. To drill granite, you should use a diamond drill bit.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out where you want to place the granite counter-top panel. Use masking tape to mark on the back of the panel where you want to drill holes for the pins.

    • 2

Secure the diamond bit into the drill. Put the dust mask on. When you drill granite, a very fine, hot dust can shear off the stone.

    • 3

Center the drill over the marked tape on the back of the panel. Start slowly and drill straight down. Make sure to keep pressure even and do not try to force the drill. Drill to the depth you want to seat the pin. Do this for each spot you want to place a pin.

Blow the dust out of each hole you made. Fill each hole 1/3 full of sealant and place the steel pin in, holding it straight until the sealant has set enough to hold the pin vertical. Leave it to dry overnight.

Use an ordinary drill for the receiving holes in the base of the counter. Add sealant to these to secure the pins to the base.
