How to Caulk a Shower Wall Panel

Modular plastic shower inserts are a popular way to install a shower. The shower consists of panels that are glued together and are installed quickly. These panels are easy to clean and last for years. However, if you have a shower wall panel that has become detached, water can leak behind it and cause damage. The panel must be refastened with caulk to keep water from causing damage to the floor underneath the shower or a ceiling on a lower level of the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean underneath the edge of the wall panel using mineral spirits and a scrubbing pad. The caulk will adhere more successfully if soap scum and other debris has been removed. Allow the panel to thoroughly dry for 24 hours to ensure there is no moisture underneath.

    • 2

Cut the end of the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle using a utility knife. Poke the foil at the bottom of the nozzle using the metal rod attached to the caulk gun. Place the caulk tube in the caulk gun and press the plunger into the back and turn it 180 degrees. Press the release button.

Insert the angled part of the caulk tube against the surface just under the edge of the wall panel. Start at the top of the panel and pull the trigger evenly as you move the caulk gun down along the entire length of the wall panel. Ensure that a solid bead of caulk is applied under the edge of the wall panel. Allow the caulk to setup for about 10 minutes.

Tape the edge of the panel every 3 to 4 inches with painter's tape to hold it down. Place 8-inch pieces of tape perpendicular to the edge of the panel. Let the caulk dry for 24 hours and remove the tape. Remove excess caulk with a razor blade at a low angle to the surface of the wall panel to prevent scratching it.
