How to Cut Glass Tile for an Outlet

Tiles are manufactured to cover walls, ceilings and floors and are made from a number of materials, including clay, stone, metal and glass. Most tiles are square, but tiles are in many other shapes, too. Despite the variety of shapes and sizes available, sometimes cutting tile to surround an outlet is necessary. Cutting glass tile effectively requires using a device different from the devices used to cut tile made of another material. You may use a tile saw, wet saw or glass scoring tool.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Tile Saw or Wet Saw

    • 1

Measure the outlet with a ruler or measuring tape. Most outlets are 4 by 2 inches, but others are in irregular shapes, which is why it is important to obtain an accurate measurement.

    • 2

Count how many glass tiles are needed to surround the outlet, and set that number of tiles on a flat surface. Mark the width and length of the outlet plus a millimeter or two on the tiles.

    • 3

Plug in the stopper that comes with the tile saw's or wet saw's water tray. Add enough water to submerge the saw's pump. The pump produces a continuous flow of water over the tile and saw's blade to keep both items cool during cutting.

    • 4

Lay the tiles on the saw platform so their markings line up with the saw blade. Pull the guard down over the blade. Put on safety goggles.

    • 5

Turn on the saw, and guide the tile up the saw blade, applying downward pressure and holding with both hands away from the blade. If the tile needs to be cut at another angle, then remove the tile and make a straight cut at that angle. Proceed in this manner with every tile, cutting along the markings.

    • 6

Position the tiles on the wall where they will be placed to verify each tile fits flush around the outlet. Make adjustments if necessary.

    Glass Scoring Tool

    • 7

Measure the outlet with a ruler or measuring tape. Most outlets are 4 by 2 inches, but others are in irregular shapes, which is why it is important to obtain an accurate measurement.

    • 8

Count how many glass tiles are needed to surround the outlet, and set that number of tiles on a flat surface. Mark the width and length of the outlet plus a millimeter or two on the tiles using a ruler or measuring tape and a pencil. Alternately, use a glass scoring tool for the measurements.

    • 9

Put on safety goggles. Hold the glass scoring tool at an angle, and use it to scratch a line on the marks of each tile. Several glass scoring tool models are made, but most work in the same manner. Either the tiles are secured onto the device or held by hand.

    • 10

Place a thin, metal wire under one tile, and use your fingers or thumbs to depress the farthest ends of the tile, causing the tile to split where you scratched lines with the glass scoring tool.
