How to Fix Holes in a Concrete Block Water Retaining Wall

Retaining walls are typically built for the purpose of propping up earth to keep it from collapsing or containing water. These walls are found in landscaping and gardens as well as in outside entryways to basements. Over time, the pressure from the weight of the earth or water behind it can cause small cracks to form in the mortar joints. This leads to small holes which eventually will grow larger and compromise the integrity of the retaining wall unless filled.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum out the holes in the retaining walls with a shop vac using a crevice tool. Do not leave small particles inside the holes that may prevent the concrete patch from fully filling the hole.

    • 2

Apply pre-mixed concrete patch to the holes with a trowel, filling the holes completely. Scrape away any excess pre-mixed concrete patch with the trowel.

    • 3

Let the pre-mixed concrete patch dry and harden according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Apply a coat of exterior masonry and stone sealer to the patch with a paintbrush, then let dry for 24 hours. Monitor the retaining wall for leaks after the sealer has dried.
