The Best Way to Remove a Mirrored Wall

Many homes contain mirrored walls that are designed to help rooms appear larger than they are. Typically, what appears as a mirrored wall is actually a thin mirror mounted to the drywall, either with a frame or without a frame. Though you may be tempted to remove a mirrored wall by breaking it, doing so is dangerous and messy. Instead, you can carefully remove the mirror in one piece so that you can use it elsewhere in the house, if desired.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the corners and edges of the mirrored wall to see if the mirror is held to the wall with screws or brackets. If you see these mounting devices, use a screwdriver to remove them. If the mirror doesn't have visible mounting screws, you will have to pry it off the wall.

    • 2

Cut around the edge of the mirror with a utility knife to slice through the caulk, if applicable. Many wall-mounted mirrors are caulked around the edges. This is especially true if the mirror is large and the owners wants it to have the appearance of a mirrored wall.

    • 3

Insert one end of a pry bar into the gap between the mirror and the wall and gently pry the mirror away from the wall. When you pry it, look in the gap to see how the mirror is mounded. There is a chance it will be glued or caulked into position, but it may also be attached by screws.

Recruit one or more assistants, depending on the size of the mirror, to stand against it and hold it as you pry. If the mirror is held in place with glue or caulk, continue prying until the mirror is free from the wall. If you uncover screws, stop prying.

Cut through the screws mounting the mirror to the wall with a hacksaw. Once you cut through the last screw, your assistants will be able to lift the mirror right off the wall.
