How to Remove Sheetrock Dust From the Walls and the Ceiling

Sheetrock dust is ultra-fine, making it more difficult to remove than other dust or debris. You're often left with this fine dust after new construction or when repairing damaged drywall and sanding it. Because it is so fine, it will settle on the ceiling, walls and floor, making it impossible for paint to adhere. Fortunately, the supplies you need are probably already on-hand, or at least simple enough to borrow from family or friends.

Things You'll Need

  • Wet-dry vacuum
  • Fine-dust collection bag for vacuum
  • Extension wands for vacuum
  • Microfiber tack cloths or other microfiber cloths
  • Pole sander or long pole
  • Damp cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Fit your wet-dry vacuum with a fine dust collection bag. These bags are designed for the finer dust particles such as sheetrock dust.

    • 2

Attach the brush attachment to the end of the wand and begin vacuuming the dust from the walls and ceilings. You may need several extension wands or a platform to put your vacuum on so it will reach the ceiling.

    • 3

Wrap a microfiber tack cloth or other microfiber cloth to the end of a pole sander or other long pole. Other long poles you can use may include hard-floor sweepers that use detachable or disposable sweeping cloths.

    • 4

Wipe down the walls and ceiling with the microfiber cloth and shake it out outside occasionally to remove built-up dust.

    • 5

Wipe down the walls with a lightly damp cloth. Wring the cloth out as thoroughly as possible before use; it should barely feel wet to the touch.
